SAUTER HARD CHARGES TO A TOP-TEN FINISH IN THE AMERICAN SPEED ASSOCIATION MIDWEST TOUR SUPER LATE MODEL SERIES
By: Kevin RamsellBURLINGTON, WI (Wednesday, October 22, 2008) – Travis Sauter will once again enjoy the upcoming American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment Championship Banquet in January. Last year, he was the recipient of a new B&B Race Engine and this year will take home a new Lefthander Chassis.
Sauter, the third generation driver from Necedah, WI, secured the new chassis after his impressive run at the ASAMT season finale at the Oktoberfest Race Weekend at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI. Sauter started 25th and came through the field to finish third allowing him to capture the Lefthander Chassis Hard Charger Award by 15 points over Kyle Calmes.
“Our weekend started off a little slow. I thought the car was pretty good heading into qualifying, maybe a little tight, so we loosened it up. Well, it was too loose qualifying. When you qualify badly, (and I am experienced with this) you really have your work cut out for you.” Sauter stated when reflecting on his busy Oktoberfest weekend.
“I knew the car would be good on a long run, but the 25 lap races on Saturday night really were not enough to show what we could do. We ran that last chance race on Sunday, made a couple changes and went for it. The car was good from the green flag, it took a couple laps to get rolling after the restarts, but once it came in it was really fast. The more laps we ran everybody were falling off and my car stayed good.”
The finish also gave Sauter a seventh place finish in the final ASAMT point standings. In 2008, he had one ECHO Power Equipment fast qualifier award, five top-five and nine top-ten finishes and made every feature event.
“The way the season started we were in the hunt for the championship and then we hit a rough patch starting with WIR that pretty much lasted until Marshfield. I thought our car was really strong early in the year, and then guys sort of caught up to our speed a little bit,” Sauter stated. “Then we had motor problems a few times and a flat tire at Milwaukee. We weren’t terrible at any of the races; we just didn’t have the speed we had earlier. Then we tested a couple times later in the season and finished strong at La Crosse.”
With the way the season was going, Sauter kept looking at the Hard Charger standings and made it a personal goal to win it. “It seems all season we would either qualify in the top 5 or outside the top 15. That almost never has you start up front and I guess that would contribute to winning the hard charger award,” Sauter explained. “It’s pretty cool to pass that many cars, but winning a race now and then would be nice also. A couple times we probably had the best car, but ran out of time going forward. The car we were running was on its 4th season, so I can really use that new chassis, and I thank Lefthander for donating it.”
Winning the hard charger award is something that Sauter will agree that it is not an easy task to do with the level of competition he faces in the ASAMT. “The competition is so tough in the ASA Midwest Tour, probably tougher than any series in the country. There have been many races that I've been worried about just making the show. I want to be known as one of the best short trackers in the country, and the way to prove that is to race against the best drivers. I look at other series and there are good racers out there, but the depth of the ASA Midwest Tour is what sets it apart. The car counts are always high, and you have to be on your game or you'll be going home.”
Sauter will get an opportunity to showcase his talents on Saturday, November 1st as he will be competing in a super late model owned by NASCAR Sprint Car Series competitor David Stremme in the CRA Super Series All-American 400 event at the Music City Motorplex located on the Nashville (TN) Fairgrounds.
Looking towards next season, Sauter has many opportunities for sponsors to partner with his team. “I have been fortunate to have great sponsors this season with Arctic Ice, Cranberry Creek Cranberries and Coleman Racing Products along with B&B Racing Engines. As far as next year goes, we are in need of primary sponsorship. I think the ASA Midwest Tour is a great series for a sponsor to be recognized and I think I would be a good fit for any potential sponsor.”
Sauter feels that his team will be a great representative for a sponsor in the ASAMT, “We have nice, clean equipment and we run up front and present a good image. I have a show car and am willing to do whatever it takes for the sponsorship to be successful for both parties. Funding is probably the most important factor when you talk about running good, and every racer is grateful for the help they receive from their sponsors.”
